Memoirs of an Entrepreneur

Hello and welcome again to my series on Memoirs of an Entreprenuer. I will be as transparent and candid as I can as we take this jouney forward and share with you the highs and low and give you a realistic picture of this entrepreneurship world.

The first step is to grow your awareness in the community. So that means looking at the most effective means of how and where your target market is and what is their interest. From there it will give you a good road map of how to draw up your awareness plan. Today we have social media which drives alot of information into the hands of customers. So good to understand its landscape in PNG. Just a few stats to share with you all there are 10.2m internet users in PNG with a breakdown per site facebook 90.96%, Pinterest 3.27%,YouTube 3.12%, Twitter 1.01%, Instagram 1%, LinkedIn 0.37%. Majority of the users are located in Pom and Lae and its gets less as you move away from these two big cities.

It is important that you have a physical location, a postal address and phone number and email your customers can reach out to. Make sure your phone number is on whats app business and that is the most cheapest way for your customers to reach out to you and open a yahoo or gmail email. All these are free you wont spend any money. Once you have that then it's time to spead the word to grow awareness of your business.

Good old flyers and leaflets are still some of the best means of spreading awareness of your business and word of mouth. So think through how you want to grow your awareness where you are located in PNG, and how does word get spread around in your town. If you live in Pom and Lae I would highly recommend a social media account and facebook is a must, other sites it is up to you and print flyers, and mini posters and drop it off give it to everyone you possibly can. You can go along to markets and also pass flyers and leaflets to as many people as you can or put it on car windsheilds in parking lots. So at times the traditional ways of spreading information still remains the most effective and with no or minimal cost.

Make appointments, go to offices, knock on doors of business houses and speak to anyone and everyone who are your potential customers.

I started mine off with 500 leaflets and a company business card, printed at Theodist and am giving out to as many people as I met and am forever on the look out to see who I can give it to. Making appointments. knocking on doors and see and talk to as many people as I can and am still giving the flyers. On top of all that I take time to pray alot seeking Godly wisdom guidance and direction on what to do on a daily basis.

PROVERBS 16:3

“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” Proverbs 16:3, NIV

My Mother's Story (Mercia Paliou)

On this International Woman's Day, I wanted to share my mum's story on her journey and her aspirations in life. To also give us a glimpse into what life was like back then and what they did to build the young PNG nation. I would not be where I am today if she did not first embark on her own journey of education, career marriage and life.   My mother's journey began in her village of Dogur in the Dagua LLG of the East Sepik Province. She was born on the 6th of September 1947. She already had 5 older siblings and she was the 5th born with 2 others after her. Born to parents who were subsistence farmers their lives revolve around fishing, gardening, hunting and gathering food to feed the family. A typical village day would consist of women going to the garden, to work on their vegetables patches whilst the man would go hunting/setting traps for bandicoot or fishing in the small creeks, rivers or the sea. Their stable diet is sago so each family has their own sago plots in th...

Toana Dei & Meri Blouse

On April 28 1978, the government declared that Friday should be set aside as a national dress day.  Citizens were encourage to wear their cultural wear to work or school. The day was referred to as Toana day. The thinking behind that day was to encourage cultural embracement and initiate a national wear which in time will take on its style and become the national wear for contemporary PNG.  Toana is from the motuan language 3rd widely spoken language in PNG and it means a symbol or a sign. A fitting word to signify the day. I am taking up this space again to feature one piece of unique clothing that has come to make its mark in PNG known as the Meri Blouse.Little did they envisage what the meri blouse would become to PNG woman. And meri blouse was introduce by Missionaries to help cover bare breast woman in the colonial days. Highly criticise as shapeless and without form created to hide the beautiful curvy body of Melanesian woman meri blouse has stood its time and held it's ...

Memoirs of an Entrepreneur (Pricing)

Pricing is something that most of us take for granted. Am not sure if you really think about price apart from when there is a price increase. Have you ever wondered how people price goods and services and what should be the correct way of pricing your items. If you price too high you will loose customers and if you price too low then you will not make a profit so there is a place where you need to come too rightly to price items. As a christian there is also God's pespective on pricing. The book of levitcus is where God instructed the Isrealites on how to price items 26: 14  And if thou sell ought unto thy neighbour, or buyest ought of thy neighbour’s hand, ye shall not oppress one another:  God is very clear he does not want us to oppress another brother by putting our price too high that they struggle to buy our item and if they do they forgo other necessecities that they need in life. When you are pricing your good or service what is the first thing that comes to min...
